Aspen locals years ago coined the term “messy vitality” to describe the fusion of different lifestyles of the affluent and the ski bums. The northeast side of town preserves this vanishing idea, as it has a diverse collection of aging free-market properties, deed-restricted employee housing complexes, expensive trailer parks and luxurious townhomes and duplexes.
Park Avenue is a perfect example of this varied blend. On one side of the street, modern and sleek multi-million dollar homes are now part of the landscape. A short walk up the road, you’ll find complexes and 1970s-era structures and cabins that are home to longtime locals.
Large condominium complexes like Centennial and Hunter Creek, both free-market and deed-restricted, have enabled many working families to secure a home in Aspen. As a result, there are tight-knit neighborhoods with people barbecuing and kids playing. Just a few blocks away, small developments like Fox Crossing are utilized as second homes and investment properties.
Smuggler Mountain Road, one of the most popular hiking trails in Aspen and serves as a gateway to the majestic and expansive Hunter Creek Valley, is the marquee of the neighborhood.
There are popular parks located throughout the neighborhood that offer sweeping views of downtown Aspen, access to the Roaring Fork River, and serve as quiet, reflective spaces.
